NEW YORK CITY MARATHON
How far would you go to support people living with macular degeneration? Well if you’re Ben Lewis, the answer is 26 miles, in one of humankind’s great tests of physical endurance.
Ben will be running on November 2, 2008, in the New York City Marathon http://www.nycmarathon.org to raise funds for AMD Alliance International. His inspiration is his father Dennis, who has had macular disease for over 30 years and now works tirelessly helping others come to terms with sight loss.
“I have experienced first hand the impact this disease has on people and their families,” says Ben. “I know how much difference this will make to supporting the AMD Alliance and the great work it does.”
This will be Lewis’s first trip to New York City, and his first time running in the city’s fabled marathon. “It is going to be a great way to get acquainted with the country, the people and the culture,” he says.
Going the Distance
The New York Marathon is the world’s largest, with 100,000 applicants vying for 38,000 positions. The event draws 2 million spectators and 315 million television viewers worldwide. The course runs through dozens of neighbourhoods in New York's five boroughs, and finishes in world-famous Central Park.
Ben Lewis lives in Surrey, England, where he works for Merrill Lynch. He and his wife Caroline have two sons, Joseph (age 3) and Harry (age 4 months).
